Longtime Covite Penney Rivers completed her 20-year labor of love this summer, in time for her late husband, Jerry Rivers, to read it—bound and printed, with red correction marks and all—before he passed away in July. She officially released her first book, “A Thumb in God’s Eye,” in October, both in ebook and paperback. On Thursday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Copperas Cove Library, she invites the local community to celebrate with her and learn more about her book, which she’ll have available for readers. “A Thumb in God’s Eye” is historical fiction set in East Texas, and is based on a true story surrounding the murder of a black man, beaten to death while in custody by police officers—because he wanted to make a phone call.
