Leon “Shotgun” Dewald, age 68, a lifetime resident of Copperas Cove passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his residence. Leon was born December 24, 1945 to Mr. Joy “JR” Dewald and Mrs. Lora Sue (Smith) Dewald in Lampasas, Texas. He graduated from Copperas Cove High School in 1964 and went to Temple Junior College on a Scholarship where he played on the National Finals Basketball Team and received his Associates’ degree. On June 11, 1965 he married the love of his life Myra Culbertson. In 1968 he graduated from Southwest Texas State University with his Bachelors’ Degree. Leon was a partner in Dewald Properties with his brother Monty Dewald at the time of his passing. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his wife, every day for the past twenty years they had a domino game at 4 p.m. He also loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and the outdoors hunting and fishing. Every year for the past 23 years he would spend time in Port Aransas, Texas at the coast with his family building memories that will stay with them the rest of their lives. His civic engagements included serving on the City Council of Copperas Cove where he was also the Mayor Pro-tem, as well as serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Myra Dewald of Copperas Cove; two sons, John Robert Dewald of Copperas Cove and Jason Dewald and his wife Melissa of Kempner; a daughter, Bradi Diaz and her husband Tony of Copperas Cove; a brother, Monty Dewald and his wife Jackie of Copperas Cove; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The Dewald family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove with Pastor Kissa Vaughn officiating. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Chandler Diaz, Levi Dewald, Peyton Diaz, Travis Dewald, Cameron Dewald, Logan Dewald, and also the coffee crew, Dave Reese, Richard Love and Bruce Barney.
