From the Vault: A look back at '59, '69, and '79
To commemorate the 125th year of publication of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press in 2019, every Friday the Leader-Press will share snippets from the community’s history over the past 60 years in From the Vault. Through August 16, Copperas Cove school and student news will be featured.
40 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Leader
Two Cove students, Gordon Graves and Donna Faircloth, have been selected for a touring concert band that travels to Europe in July 1979. Graves is a percussionist and Faircloth plays the saxophone. They began the tour with a concert in Carnegie Hall prior to leaving the United States.
50 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Press
Gunner’s Mate Second Class Dudley D. Chisholm, son of Mrs. G.W. Brandkamp of 612 Teinert, was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service while serving in North Vietnam. He attended Copperas Cove High School.
Head football coach Jackie Williams said this week he looks for a winning football team this year at Copperas Cove High School. Key returnees to the football backfield for the coming football season will be wingback Richard Daley, tailback Tony Nicholas, fullback Tommy Lamb, and calling the plays from quarterback will be Gary Batty.
60 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Courier
Six Cove teachers attended the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading conference held at Sul Ross College. They were Mrs. Myra Johnson, Miss Leta Baker, Mrs. Mae Stevens, Miss Laura Viden, Miss Norine Wakefield, and Miss Jewell Yarbrough.
