From the Vault: A look back at '59, ''69, '79
To commemorate the 125th year of publication of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press in 2019, every Friday the Leader-Press will share snippets from the community’s history over the past 60 years in From the Vault.
40 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Leader
The Copperas Cove senior class held a Centennial Super Stars Olympics, chaired by Kevin Conboy and Bill Farnella. Businesses sponsored the races such as egg toss, sack race, 440-yard dash, 220-yard dash, obstacle course, and softball throw. Proceeds went for the senior class trip to Houston and Galveston and the class gift fund.
Kendall Senser, a graduate of Copperas Cove High School, was selected for the troupe “Up With People” that tours the United States.
50 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Press
The students at Halstead Elementary School and Mise Jewell Elementary School raised $95.10 and collected supplies to be sent to troops in Viet Nam by the American Red Cross.
Kay Bowden, 16, won first place in the high school science fair sweepstakes for a biology project in dentristy. She won out of more than overall 124 entries that went on to complete at Central Texas College, Temple and Waco.
60 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Courier
Copperas Cove schools announced teachers for the upcoming school year, among them Miss Jewel Yarbrough, Mrs. Beatrice Smith and Miss Sallie Cobb, teaching first grade; second grade, Mrs. Bessie Hereford, Mrs. Sarah Cockrum and Mrs. Kenneth Harris. Third grade, Mrs. Mae Stevens, Mrs. Clyde Allison, Mrs. Laura Virden. Fourth grade, Mrs. Hollie Parsons, Mrs. Myrna Johnson, and Miss Norine Wakefield.
