Two Copperas Cove members of the CCHS class of 2018 were recently announced among the recipients of scholarships awarded by the Scholarships For Military Children program.
Juan Jiminez and Carleigh Ross each received $2,000 scholarships. Juan’s parents are of Vanessa and Alejandro Jiminez, and plans to study at Abilene Christian University. Carleigh’s parents are James and Amanda Sawyer. Carleigh will begin at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The two and 700 others were selected from among 5,000 high school and college students who applied for scholarships at commissary locations worldwide. Fort Hood is one of more than 250 commissaries operated worldwide by the Defense Commissary Agency.
The Fisher House Foundation both sponsored and funded Jiminez’ and Ross’ scholarships, as well as the scholarships for 16 other Fort Hood area student applicants.
Applicants were required to maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, participate in volunteer activities, demonstrate leadership, and submit an essay on the topic “With the development of high speed internet, you are now living in a world that is completely different than 20 years ago. What are the pluses and minuses for society and the family? How would you address the minuses?”
The two faced some stiff competition among their military child peers.
“The cumulative GPA remains in the 3.7 to 3.9 range,” said Bernard T. Core’, president of Scholarship Managers, the organization which provided scholarship management services. “As in all prior years, the caliber of the applicants to the ‘Scholarships for Military Children Program’ continues to be a step above those students who apply to many other scholarship programs we administer.”
