Members of the community helped make Valentine’s Day a bit more special for residents of Copperas Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation.

Some local businesses brought goodies or cards to help brighten the day of nursing home residents who might otherwise not have received anything for the holiday.

“They love people coming in and out. They love having guests,” said Denise Dabney, Activity Director for Copperas Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation. “It lets them know that they’re not forgotten.”

Amy’s Attic Self Storage made sure that the residents of both Copperas Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation and Hill Country Rehabilitation and Nursing received a card for Valentine’s Day. Starting January 17th, they collected approximately 200 valentines that they delivered on Valentine’s Day.

“The residents just really love it,” said Lisa Sherwood, manager of the Copperas Cove Amy’s Attic Self Storage. “A lot of them don’t have families that come in, and we just wanted to make their day special…We wanted to show them that we do care.”

Residents of Copperas Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation smiled as they read their cards, many of which were made by students from J.L Williams/Lovett Ledger Elementary School. Some remarked that their cards were even more special because the kids made the cards for them.

Amy’s Attic Self Storage weren’t the only ones to donate to the nursing home, New Century Hospice donated a cake and some cupcakes, Nicole Best from National United Bank brought cupcakes, and the VFW Post 8577 Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Cooties brought candy and goodies for both residents and staff.

As if eating a bunch of Valentine’s themed goodies and receiving some cute cards wasn’t enough fun, residents were also able to vote for the king and queen of the nursing home.

“They have a lot of fun doing that,” said Dabney. “They are really are proud to be able to vote for king and queen…Everybody is really involved in it.”

Residents were excited to be able to vote and looked forward to seeing who among them would be crowned king and queen. Some joked around claiming the title before results were announced, but the audience clapped and cheered as the winners were announced.

Winners of the title of king and queen of the nursing home were Jake Wiley and Sharon McIntosh. The winners of king and queen of D Hall were Excellent McGill and Florence Herzog.

Jake Wiley, winner of the title of king of the nursing home, said that he thought the party was neat and that the best part was him being voted as the king. He said that he doesn’t have kids or grandkids, but he thought the Valentine that he received from a 2nd grader was very special.

Sharon McIntosh, winner of the title of queen of the nursing home, said that she thought the party was very nice and very considerate. She enjoyed winning the title and proudly showed off a rose that lit up that she received along with the crown and other prizes.

“It felt very nice. I was so surprised,” said McIntosh about being crowned queen of the nursing home. “I want to thank everyone that voted for me and wish them a happy Valentine’s Day.”
