The Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation Department is holding its 15th annual polar bear swim on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 9 a.m. at City Park’s main pool, at 1206 West Ave. B.

This year the event will last for two hours with a few different touches for those ages 10 and up who are brave enough to don their swimwear and take a hop into the pool.

“New this year we will have three contests, a costume contest, a belly flop contest and a treading water contest,” said Joe Brown, Parks & Recreation Director. “In between the costume and the belly flop we will hold the ‘Taking the Plunge.’ At the end of the event we will hold a raffle and the award ceremony for all who entered into the contest. We are excited about the event and hope to see the community come out to enjoy the cold/wet environment.”

Registration is $10, or $20 for those would would like a commemorative t-shirt through Friday, Jan. 22.

Registration is taking place at the Parks & Recreation office, located at 1408 Golf Course Rd. Those who register for the swim must also sign a waiver and release agreement.

This year’s event sponsors include Starbucks, H-E-B Plus!, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Schlotzsky’s and Pampered Pets. Registrants will be treated to coffee, hot cocoa and doughnuts.

The city’s regular pool hours don’t begin until early June, but Saturday’s event will provide residents with something a little out of the ordinary during the winter months. For more information, contact Parks and Recreation at (254) 542-2719.
