The Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation Department is holding the 5K Run to the Bear Plunge on Saturday, January 27 at City Park pool, located at 1206 West Ave. B.
Last year, the 5k run was an addition to the polar bear plunge, held annually for the past 17 years. Now, the event will have another benefit for area running enthusiasts.
“The City is excited to partner this year with the Carlson Law Firm and announce the 5K Run/Walk is now part of the Centex Race Series,” said Heather Bryan, Tourism and Information Coordinator for the City of Copperas Cove. “Redemption Race Productions will be providing chipped bibs to track race times, as well as provide instant results at the timing trailer. Both events promise to be fun and excitement for the entire family.”
For those who wish to simply take the Polar Bear Plunge, there is no charge, but participants must be age 10 and up. Pre-registration for the plunge is ongoing at the Copperas Cove Civic Center, located at 1206 W. Avenue B, through January 26, at 7 p.m. or can be completed on the morning of the event.
There will be costume, belly flop and treading water contests. Refreshments will be available to all
participants and t-shirts will be available for $15.
After the race, medals will be awarded, after which the costume contest will kick off at 10 a.m., followed by the plunge at 10:15, then bell flop, treading water, with the awarding of prizes and raffle drawings at 11 a.m.
Preregistration for the 5k is at https://redemptionrp.raceentry.com/races/5k-run-to-the-polar-bear-plunge.... The cost is $20 prior to Jan. 27 or $25 the day of the event. Same-day registration for the race begins 6:30 a.m. the morning of the event, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Runners will receive a performance event t-shirt and goodie bag.
Bryan said donations for the goodie bags and raffle are welcome, and that any business looking to sponsor/donate, or set up a booth at the event, should contact her at hbryan@copperascovetx.gov or 254-542-2719.
