Volunteers showed up in force on Saturday to wash cars for Pink Warrior Angels, a new nonprofit headed up by Julie Moser, a breast cancer survivor.

Members of the Pride of Cove band also pitched in to wash cars alongside the volunteers with PWA.

Scott Frederick, president of the band boosters, said the aim on Saturday was to raise funds to purchase pink plumes for the band members’ uniforms.

This fall, the band will wear the pink plumes during October’s Pink Out Game in Bulldawg Stadium.

Frederick said the pink plumes will add to the uniforms’ look this fall.

“Some of the students wear gloves when they play, so last fall they wore gloves, and the drummers wore pink neck scarves,” Frederick said. “This year, everyone will have the plumes.”

The plumes will also be worn in honor of the band’s late band director, Andrew Nixon, who passed away last month from cancer.

Not only did current band members and band boosters participate, but so did a parent of a former band student.

Frederick said one of the volunteers on Saturday was Catherine Sharbeno, who had a recent graduate, and although she no longer has a student in the band she came out to help raise funds anyway.

Kori Ramos, a flute player with the Pride of Cove Band, volunteered on Saturday along with several other band members.

Julie Moser, a breast cancer survivor and founder of PWA, was ill and unable to be at Saturday morning’s event. It went on to raise $640, Moser said, thanks to the volunteers from both the nonprofit and the band.

Pink Warrior Angels is holding their next monthly informational meeting at Bella Sera on Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. and all are invited to attend for a $5 dinner. Those who bring a guest will receive an extra ticket for a door prize.

The nonprofit is also gearing up for its inaugural golf tournament on August 6. For more about the mission behind Pink Warrior Angels, visit www.pinkwarriorangels.org.
