Halstead students clean up in calendar contest

Twenty-four months, two calendars, two covers and 26 winners. Hettie Halstead Elementary students’ artwork is going public.
The Greater Fort Hood Area Recycle Bowl included a poster contest about recycling that was open to all public, private, and homeschool students in Killeen, Fort Hood, and Copperas Cove. 
Two calendars were made with the winning posters, meaning 24 months and two covers for a total of 26 winners to have their artwork featured in these calendars. 
The artwork of students at Hettie Halstead Elementary in Copperas Cove had 13 winners which will grace half of the open slots for artwork.
Winning entries were selected from third through fifth graders. Christine Luciano, Fort Hood Outreach Coordinator of DPW Environmental, presented each student with a calendar with their artwork featured in it and a sun catcher made from recycled glass.
“Their artwork was amazing and I loved how it featured soldiers,” Luciano said, sharing some of her favorite artwork that she had taken photos of on her phone.
Fifth grader Hailey Palmer’s artwork was selected for one of the calendar’s covers.
“The reason I feel it is very important to reduce, reuse, and recycle is so when I am older and the generations after me, will still have the resources we need to live on this earth,” Palmer said. “It is our duty to take care of it.”
