Approximately 35 children and their families showed up at Frames & Things in Cove Terrace Shopping Center to have cookies, make a Christmas ornament and spend a moment with Santa Claus.
The second annual “Crafting With Santa” was held by the Five Hills Art Guild, which charged $3 per ornament.
With the help of guild volunteers, children made ornaments shaped like cupcakes, adding glitter, sprinkles, along with a pompom ball for the cherry on top.
Guild members Sherri Wilson, Jeanne Lizama, Linda Lapierre, Emily Scott-Graham, Annette Siriana were present to lend a hand with glitter, glue and hot glue guns. The volunteers showed each child the steps to decorate their own ornament.
Before or after making their ornament, children and parents could visit with Santa and take pictures.
The guild members came up with the idea to have a craft time after last year’s cold, wet weather at Krist Kindl Markt.
This year, they brought the event back to raise a little bit of funds for the guild. However, attendance was down this year compared to last year.
According to guild vice-president, Sherri Wilson, it’s about more than the funds raised.
“Just seeing their faces light up, being satisfied with what they’ve made,” Wilson said. “It’s more fo a community thing…and Santa being here is just the icing on the cake.”
The event also gave the guild members something to do while waiting for the rainy, cooler weather to dissipate so volunteers can continue painting the mural on the Ledger Furniture building, located at the corner of Main Street and Avenue D.
The guild is also gearing up for its second annual art festival, set for Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17 in Copperas Cove City Park.
