Filing is now open through 5 p.m. on Monday, March 4, for a vacant spot on the Copperas Cove city council.

Place 5 was vacated on Jan. 11, when former Place 5 councilmember Manuel Montanez submitted his letter of resignation which was accepted by the council at its January 16 meeting.

At the Tuesday Feb. 6 meeting, the council called for a Special Election to be held on May 4, 2024, to fill the unexpired term. Place 5 term runs through November 2025.

To qualify to be a candidate, residents must be registered voters who live within the Copperas Cove city limits for at least one year preceding election day, and have not been convicted of a felony.

Candidate applications can be found at https://www.copperascovetx.gov/city_secretary/election_information/.

Completed applications must be submitted to or dropped off at the City Secretary’s office, located at 914 S. Main St., Suite D.

Interested residents who wish to run for council are encouraged to file prior to the deadline, to ensure their application is verified. If no errors are found, the City Secretary will officially accept the application and notify the candidate in writing.

If any errors are found during review, the application will be rejected and the candidate will be notified in writing as to why. Last-minute filers run the risk of not appearing on the ballot if their application is rejected.

A few items that can cause an application to be rejected include title of the office sought is left blank or is incorrect, the application is missing the name or portion of a name, the date of birth is missing, or if the notary stamp is missing.

“These are just some examples. As per the Election Code, I have five days to review all applications. If an application is rejected for any reason, the candidate will be notified in writing. They can always resubmit a new one if they so choose to,” said City Secretary Lisa Wilson.

The Special Election will be held in conjunction with Coryell County's General Election. Dates for early voting will be April 22-26, 2024 and April 29-30, 2024.
