With a little less than three weeks left in the candidate filing period for the Nov. 8 general election, a total of seven candidates have filed to run so far, for positions on the Copperas Cove city council and the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees.
For the Copperas Cove city council, Shawn Alzona, Place 3 incumbent, was the first to file on July 25. He is running again this year, because he filled the remaining year for the Place 3 term by winning a December 2021 runoff. The seat was vacated when Dan Yancey won his bid for the Mayor’s seat in November 2021.
John Hale filed on July 29 to run for Place 4, currently occupied by Jay Manning. Manning, who is term limited, cannot run again for this position.
Then on Tuesday, Aug. 2, Manuel “Monty” Montanez filed to run for Place 5 on the Copperas Cove city council, currently occupied by incumbent Dianne Yoho Campbell, who filed for office on July 26. This makes one contested race so far for the city council.
Applications for a place on the ballot for the Copperas Cove city council will be accepted at the City Secretary’s office through 5 p.m., Monday, August 22.
The physical and mailing address for filing an application is Copperas Cove City Hall, Attn: Lisa Wilson, 914 S. Main Street, Suite D, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.

Over on the CCISD board of trustees, longtime incumbents Joan Manning (Place 4) and Mike Wilburn (Place 3) have filed to run. As of Wednesday afternoon, notice had not been received if anyone else had filed for those positions.
For Place 5 on the board of trustees, the district received an application from Heather Copeland on Aug. 1. The current Place 5 incumbent is Jeff Gorres, who is in his first term of office.
Election filing for the CCISD trustees positions continues through Monday, August 22, through 5 p.m. that day. Regular office hours for the district are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
