Starting with boxes of parts, the Copperas Cove High School Principles of Engineering class worked as a team to construct a machine capable of raising a flag three feet in the air on Friday. “We were split into four teams, our goal is to make this flag rise three feet with one human input and nothing else.” freshman ThomasStarling said. “This project is good for future classes so you can see how gears rotate. Gears are used for more than grandfather clocks. If we have time we will figure out the actual force advantage of this machine.” Using a system of pulleys and weights, the team was successful in raising the flag, and continued to adjust the mechanics of the machine to improve the performance.
