The Double C’s square dance club of Copperas Cove has been around for 45 years and they’re looking to recruit new dancing enthusiasts as they host two open houses coming up this month at the Copperas Cove Public Library.
On Tuesday Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., the club welcomes newcomers to find out more about the free beginning square dance classes. The Double C’s graduated a class in the spring, but are set to begin their fall lessons on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The Copperas Cove-based square dance club is part of a larger network of square dance clubs in Central Texas and draws a regular crowd from the local area every Friday evening.
Described by the group as “friendship set to music,” the dances and lessons are family oriented, with dancers “nine to 90” invited to participate.
Many people typically equate square dancing music with the sound of fiddles and other instruments associated with country music, but the dances also feature modern sounds. At the group’s 45th anniversary celebration in April, the dance caller played Maroon 5’s song “Moves Like Jagger” and called a square dance to that tune.
The square dance open sessions on Friday nights draw dancers from Gatesville, Killeen, Georgetown and beyond to Copperas Cove. The open sessions also have times of line dancing and sometimes the two-step, and other dances.
