Council canvasses votes, prepares for new members

Copperas Cove City Secretary Mariela Altott presented the official returns from the Nov. 4 ballots that held two council seat positions and eight city charter amendments. During the gubernatorial election, George Duncan was elected to serve in the Place 6 seat, with 2,248 votes and Matthew Russell the Place 7 seat with 2,187 votes. Coryell County as a whole had a turnout of 8,788, 25.19 percent of the 34,882 registered voters with 18,341 of those living in Copperas Cove. Of the city’s 4,070 ballots, nearly 2000 came on Election Day with early turnouts drawing 1,815 and 294 voters casting a ballot absentee. Proposition 1 passed 2609- 736 allowing for the council to appoint a chairperson in the absence of both the mayor and mayor pro tem and not lose their right to vote on the council.
