Christmas party at the Senior Center

By PAMELA GRANT

The Copperas Cove Senior Center was the place to be Tuesday afternoon for wintertime festivities.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the Senior Center held a Christmas party.

Entertainment was provided by Blast Back to the Past, Scotty Ray, who sang live alongside Nakima Marshall, a high school junior.

The event also featured food, door prizes and even a snowball fight.

The snowball fight was held using plush snowballs. Those left holding the snowballs when the music finished were out of the competition. The winner received a carousel which was donated as a prize for the party. Prizes given away at the event were all donations that were given to the center.

“I really enjoy being out here and seeing the seniors having a good time,” said the city of Copperas Cove’s public information officer, Kevin Keller.

“They love it, they get up and dance!” said Jeri Wood, the community outreach specialist. “Regardless of how old they are, life is still fun.”

This year’s Christmas party was the center’s biggest and most successful party yet. Wood said she enjoyed seeing all of the seniors and their family members having a good time. She said she was so happy to see one of the oldest members of the Senior Center, Kat Lessley (94) get up and dance. Wood said that it was one of the first times that she’d ever seen Lessley smile.

“It’s good. I enjoyed it,” Lessley said. “We ain’t never had anything like this, but I like it. I like to get up and move.”

“This is my third time coming to this and this one’s the best one ever…I’m having a wonderful time,” said Glenda Smolen. Smolen added she thinks Jeri Wood has done a wonderful job with the Senior Center. “She’s the best thing that ever happened to this place.”

Michelle Elliot, another senior who attended the event, agreed with Smolen and added she likes everything Wood has done for the center and Wood always makes sure to pay attention to each senior’s individual needs.

“I’m just glad I could be here with my wife,” said Charlie Morris, who attended the event with his wife, Joyce. “It’s been fun. The food was good. The singing was wonderful.”
