CCHS Drama Department to have three showings of "The Short Happy Madness of Julian Thaddeus Spring"
The cast and crew consisting of 27 Copperas Cove High School students can identify with the 30 characters they are playing in this weekend’s auditioned play, “The Short Happy Madness of Julian Thaddeus Spring” by William Gleason.
The play is a comedy about Julian Thaddeus Springer - J. T. for short - who struggles to succeed as an athlete and with girls. J.T.’s problems begin to upset his home life and his parents exile him to his room where he begins to watch nostalgic programs of a much happier time. He becomes convinced that he’s a 1950’s personality trapped in the body of a modern teenager. To escape reality, he creates a make-believe town called Oakdale, in the 1950’s, where he’s not a loser, but someone special. The play is fast-paced and fun. Said Molli Maberry, CCHS teacher in Theatre Arts I and Technical Theatre.
“These students have worked tirelessly since October to bring an interesting and entertaining night of theatre to our community. Auditions for the show were open for the entire school and over 50 students tried out,” she said.
This is Maberry’s first show to direct at CCHS and she said she “is so excited for the show to open.”
CCHS freshman Trajon Thompson who plays two characters, auditioned because he read the play and was interested in performing.
“The play is interesting and funny. I have acted before in many plays, and I would recommend everyone come watch the show.”
Mayberry said the production is family-friendly. The production is presented December 5-7 with show times at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
