The filing period opened on Saturday ahead of the Nov. 5, 2024 general election in Copperas Cove.

Local elected office positions on the ballot include two places on the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees, as well as Places 1 and 2 on the Copperas Cove city council, and mayor.

For the Copperas Cove city council, Place 1 is held by Joann Courtland and Place 2 is held by Fred Chavez. The two are term limited and cannot run for a third term of office for those positions. Dan Yancey is the current mayor and is in his first term as mayor and can run again.

Yancey has filed to run for a second term as mayor.

Christina Strohfus has filed to run for Copperas Cove City Council Place 1.

So far as of the morning of Friday, July 26, those are the only two to file for open positions on the city council.

Election packets for city council candidate are available online at https://www.copperascovetx.gov/city_secretary/election_information/, and may be dropped off between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., the city secretary’s office at City Hall, located at 914 South Main St., Ste. D. Completed packets may be mailed to P.O. Drawer 1449, Copperas Cove TX 76522. Packets may be emailed to lwilson@copperascovetx.gov

Interested residents who wish to run for council are encouraged to file prior to the deadline, to ensure their application is verified. If no errors are found, the City Secretary will officially accept the application and notify the candidate in writing.

If any errors are found during review, the application will be rejected and the candidate will be notified in writing as to why. Last-minute filers run the risk of not appearing on the ballot if their application is rejected. A few items that can cause an application to be rejected include title of the office sought is left blank or is incorrect, the application is missing the name or portion of a name, the date of birth is missing, or if the notary stamp is missing.

For the CCISD board of trustees,  Place 1 is presently held by Inez Faison and Place 2 is presently held by Shameria Ann Davis.

According to social media and news releases, Sherry Hoffpauir filed to run for Place 1 and Timothy Traeger filed to run for Place 2. CCISD did not confirm any candidates as of press time Thursday morning.
