A 33-year-old Copperas Cove woman is dead and a 37-year-old man is the Coryell County jail for murder after a Thursday shooting in Copperas Cove.
Destiney Jassmund Carey, 33, was found shot inside a residence in the 1000 block of Hobby Road on Thursday, after Copperas Cove police responded around 12:25 p.m. to a 911 hangup call. According to the arrest affidavit, dispatch advised they could hear screaming in the background prior to the call being disconnected. Upon arrival when the officer tried to make contact with those inside the residence, he heard screaming and kicked open the door as shots were fired from inside the home.
The officer found Carey lying on the floor near the front door, and 37-year-old Kevin Frazier was lying on the living room floor. The officer attempted lifesaving measures on Carey until EMS arrived, to no avail.
Frazier had gunshot wounds to his torso area and was transported to Darnall Army Medical Center for treatment. An autopsy of Carey’s body was ordered, which yielded additional details of her wounds.
An officer went to Darnall to interview Frazier further, and upon Frazier’s release from the hospital on Saturday, he likewise was interviewed at the Copperas Cove Police Department.
“Kevin’s description of events from the scene of the incident, the hospital, and the subsequent interview at the police department were not consistent,” the complaint read. “Kevin’s description of the shooting was also inconsistent with the evidence obtained of Destiney’s injuries as described by the medical examiner.”
Frazier also faces a charge of assault against a public servant, with that arrest warrant reflecting that when the officer kicked in the front door and shots were fired, one of those bullets went through a window attached to the front entrance of the home. The bullet then passed through the officer’s left pants leg, with a glass shard embedding into the officer’s leg.
Carey, who also went by Destiney Cannon, was the owner and operator of the shop High Sadity Boutique in Killeen.
Frazier was listed on the Coryell County Jail roster as of Monday morning and the investigation continues into this incident. Frazier's bond has been set at $1,000,000 for murder and $750,000 for assault against a public servant. On Wednesday, April 6, the department’s daily bulletin had an “assault with bodily injury – family violence” report for 1002 Hobby Rd., but no charges were filed with that report.
