Area state parks hosting First Day hikes on Friday

By LYNETTE SOWELL

Texas Parks & Wildlife invites people to get out and get moving on New Year’s Day with annual First Day hikes at many Texas state parks.

Locally, Mother Neff State Park in eastern Coryell County is hosting both morning and afternoon hikes, including a hike through the limestone canyon to Tonkawa Cave, climbing the Rock Tower and viewing wildlife at the Washpond.

Hikers should wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a bottle of water. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Due to terrain, strollers and other wheeled devices are not recommended. The hike is free, but park entrance fees do apply, at $2 per person for ages 13 and older, with children 12 and under admitted free.
