Two weeks remain in the filing period for Copperas Cove’s Nov. 5, 2024 general elections.

The Copperas Cove Independent School District is having elections for Place 1 and Place 2 on the board of trustees.

Place 1 incumbent is Inez Faison. Faison, first elected to the board of trustees in 2007, has filed to run for another term. Faison has one challenger for the position, as Sherry Hoffpauir filed to run for Place 1 on July 20.

Shameria Ann Davis, Place 2 incumbent, has filed for election. Davis is currently in her second three-year term in Place 2.  Like Faison, Davis has one challenger, Timothy Traeger, who filed on July 20 to run for Place 2.

CCISD is accepting ballot applications through Monday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m.

Applications for the ballot are available on the district’s website at https://www.ccisd.com/page/election-2024.

Candidate applications may be mailed or hand-delivered to Copperas Cove ISD, 408 S. Main St., Copperas Cove, TX 76522. Copperas Cove ISD accepts candidate applications Monday – Friday, during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Aug. 19, the district’s offices will be open to accept applications from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the Copperas Cove city council, there are three who have filed to run for office.

Mayor Dan Yancey has filed to run for reelection for a second three-year term.

Christina Strohfus and Howard Hawk have filed to run for Place 1. Place 1 is presently held by Joann Courtland and she is finishing her second three-year term and cannot run again for the position.

George Duncan has filed to run for Place 2. Place 2 is currently held by Fred Chavez. Like Courtland, Chavez is in his second term and cannot run again for Place 2.

Unlike the CCISD board of trustees which has no term limits, Copperas Cove city council positions and the mayor position are limited to two 3-year terms.

Election packets for city council candidate are available online at https://www.copperascovetx.gov/city_secretary/election_information/, and may be dropped off between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., the city secretary’s office at City Hall, located at 914 South Main St., Ste. D. Completed packets may be mailed to P.O. Drawer 1449, Copperas Cove TX 76522. Packets may be emailed to lwilson@copperascovetx.gov.

Those interested in filing for a place on the ballot are encouraged to file prior to the last day. Each application is verified for accuracy, and the City Secretary has the authority to reject a candidate application that is not correctly completed.

A few items that can cause an application to be rejected include title of the office sought is left blank or is incorrect, the application is missing the name or portion of a name, the date of birth is missing, or if the notary stamp is missing.

As per the Election Code, the City Secretary has five days to review all applications. If an application is rejected for any reason, the candidate will be notified in writing. Candidates can then resubmit a new application if they so choose.
