A 22-year-old Copperas Cove man is in the Coryell County jail after turning himself in last Friday in connection with the September 3 burglary and the theft of 26 handguns from Kwik Cash Pawn.
Christwell Lowell Mathes Jr. has been charged with burglary of a building and theft of a firearm and received a total of $30,000 in bonds for both charges.
The criminal complaint and arrest warranted resulted after an investigation conducted by the Copperas Cove Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, with Mathes being arraigned by Coryell County Justice of the Peace John Guinn.
Mathes is alleged to have stolen the items after breaking into the store, after which security video of the break was released, showing a lone male with a towel draped over his head going from case to case in the store, looking at the selection of handguns, then picking up the guns and pacing them into a bag.
The break-in and weapons robbery occurred around late Sunday evening on September 3, with a succession of alarms at other businesses along Business 190 being triggered shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday night. Two of the 26 stolen handguns had been recovered as of Thursday, Ruiz said.
