With the start of a new year of school, the Girl Scouts of Copperas Cove are also beginning a new year of scouts.
The Girl Scouts hosted a “Here’s the Scoop” open house event at the Copperas Cove Public Library wherein they invited the public out to a day of fun where they could learn about the Girl Scouts while enjoying delicious ice cream with a variety of fun toppings.
In addition to enjoying ice cream and playing games, participants were invited to create their own fun crafts including custom ice cream cones or other treats out of felt, pompoms, pipe cleaners, and other items. The crafts were meant to be swappable, collectable trinkets for the scouts.
“It’s just a way for the girls to get back into the groove of Girl Scouts,” said Kaitlyn Moss, Service Unit Director.
Moss said that the ice cream social is also a way for them to get people interested in Girl Scouts which can be tough with everything else going on in their life to include school and extracurricular activities.
Still, Moss said that joining the Girl Scouts is worth it and can be very beneficial for its members.
“It’s about empowering the girls. I like mentoring them and watching them grow,” said Moss. “It’s about giving them the opportunity to see themselves grow.”
Kelly Johnson and her 5-year-old, Kendra Johnson, are new to the scouts and Saturday’s open house was their second event with the scouts.
“It’s been pretty great,” said Johnson. She talked about how at their first meeting, after finding out that Kendra didn’t have any sisters, they declared that all the members of the scouts are now her sisters. “They’re giving her a sense of sisterhood.”
Johnson also said that she likes how well planned everything is as well as the fact that being a member is not a huge time commitment as they only meet about twice a month.
Kendra said that she was enjoying herself as well. She particularly enjoyed her chocolate ice cream with whipped cream and sprinkles.
“I liked the ice cream…I played musical chairs twice, and I got to make this cupcake,” said Kendra, proudly showing off the cupcake trinket that she had crafted at the event.
