This month marks six months of business for Five O’L Heifers, located at 306 Cove Terrace Shopping Center.

Five O’L Heifers offers vintage items, antiques, refinished furniture, boutique clothing, home décor and gifts. Owners Joan Kelley and Deborah Maaninga decided to open their own store after renting a space for approximately 10 years where they specialized in “shabby chic” furniture, where they took new or used furniture and used paint to create a distressed look.

The name is in reference to the five women who work in the store: Deborah Maaninga, Joan Kelley, Sandra Hill, Kyra Moore and Evelyn Heath.

Since opening six months ago, business has been steady, and Kelley said that they have had a customer and made a sale every day.

“A lot of people can’t say that,” she said. “We’re getting people from Waco, Llano, lots of Lampasas, Austin. There’s a lot of people coming from different places.”

Kelley said the thing she liked most about owning and running Five O’L Heifers was seeing the different mixture of people who come in and shop.

“Different people come from different places, and we always ask where they’re from,” Kelley said.

Maaninga said her favorite part is two-fold.

“I like to see all of the different people that come in also,” Maaninga said. “I like to do a lot of shabby chic furniture. We like to do that. It’s fun to take something that looks old and turn it into something different.”

Some customers have come in purely for the name, with one group coming in looking for steaks, according to Kelley. Others have come in just to see what the store is about and what it offers.

Kelley said that they are also approached by vendors from Waco and Eddy and other areas who want to have their items featured in the store. Despite opening six months ago, they are quickly outgrowing their current space, she added.

As a nod to their name, their best-selling items include cow print and cow themed clothing and décor. But there is a little bit of everything, from gifts for wine enthusiasts including an etched wineglass that reads “The Real Housewives of Coryell County”, as well as items for chicken lovers, cat and dog lovers, farm animals, and more. Featured in the front room of the store is blue and white pottery, with some furniture made by Kelly and Maaninga. One piece of furniture features broken pieces of a pot repurposed to be a decorative accent.

Some of the brands they carry include Milk Reclamation Barn, which offers candles and wax melts; Circle E Candles; Crazy Train Clothing; and Dixie Belle Paint Company, which makes the chalk paints that Kelley and Maaninga use on their shabby chic furniture. They also have several items featuring the “Yellowstone” television show characters/logo.

“We tried to find a place that not only could you buy antiques and vintage items, but you can also buy new things for gifts and things like that because there’s not that many places in Cove to go and buy a gift if you wanted to buy something,” Maaninga said.

Five O’L Heifers is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They do not have a website at this time, but they do have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Five-OL-Heifers-113306584465043
