Last week, National Geographic released the first trailer of the miniseries “The Long Road Home”, which depicts the eight-hour battle to rescue a 1st Cavalry Division platoon ambushed in Sadr City, Iraq, on April 4, 2004.
The miniseries, based on Martha Raddatz’s New York Times best-selling book of the same name, was shot in the Fort Hood area, as well as some areas of Copperas Cove to include a home on Skyline Drive.
The film crew used at least two locations in Copperas Cove, the parking lot of Eastside Baptist Church as well as that of VFW Post 8577, to park its numerous trailers for actors and others involved in filming the movie to include costuming, props and makeup.
The miniseries crew also filmed on a range area on Fort Hood’s MOUT site, which is constructed as a Middle Eastern town and is used for military operations in urbanized terrain training. The site was transformed to look like Sadr City in Iraq. Executive producer Mikko Alanee stated in the trailer that the movie’s set on Fort Hood was the operating set in North America at the time it was filmed.
Among the miniseries celebrity stars are Kate Bosworth, Jason Ritter and Michael Kelly. Bosworth plays Gina Denomy, wife of Capt. Troy Denomy, played by Ritter. Michael Kelly, who stars in the television series “House of Cards”, plays the role of Lt. Col. Gary Volesky.
An open casting call was also held locally earlier this year in a search for paid background characters and extras.
On Saturday night, a closed cast wrap-up party was held Saturday night at Joker’s Southern Nights in Copperas Cove, during which cast members had the chance to view the first hour of the first episode.
The Long Road Home is scheduled to air on the National Geographic Channel this fall.
