Silvia Chastain is looking for a few individuals to help the less fortunate and disabled here in the Cove. Chastain spoke to the Copperas Cove Rotary Club about her new effort to help them with yard work.
Chastain said as she drove through town, she saw so many yards in disrepair and began thinking of those who either did not have the funds to keep their yards up, or the disabled who just could not do the work.
She had been calling on churches and pastors to identify those in need of assistance.
Now she is calling on folks in the community to volunteer just one hour a week to help the identified residents repair and maintain their yards.
So far, she has not received any volunteer calls but is hoping for the best. Chastain has set up a Facebook page, The Copperas Cove Garden Heinzelman, and is making up flyers to distribute around the area to publicize the need for volunteers.
She asked everyone to please call her at (254) 833-3064 and sign up to help.
The next speaker was Jean Davis, the chapter director for “Days for Girls.” This organization supplies culturally appropriate solutions for girls and young women in foreign countries who have no access to supplies needed during their monthly periods.
Because they have nothing to help them during these times of month, many have to stay home from school or work. This not only deprives many of an education, it also hurts women who are employed a full paycheck.
Davis said girls and young women receiving these kits can gain back as much as 180 days of education during the three years of use the kits supply and those employed will be able to work 36 uninterrupted months. The “Days for Girls” organization can be reached via the web at www.daysforgirls.org.
