While delivering packages for UPS, Josh Quinn dreamed of making a living while sharing his passion for photography. Routine stops at The Studio in Temple helped land him the opportunity and eventual full-time photographer’s position with the Temple Daily Telegram, where he has worked for nearly a decade.
Framed and hanging on the upper gallery of the Oveta Culp Hobby Memorial Library at Central Texas College library is the culmination of his works as his traveling show, Media Man, is on display through next Thursday.
“Selecting the 30 images to display for the show was probably the hardest edit I have ever done in my career,” said Quinn. “I have images from the dog show at the Expo Center, state football games covering the Cameron Yoe and then there is an image of Robert Griffin III during his Heisman season at Baylor.”
Quinn’s favorite image on display comes from the Temple Air Show that depicts a trail of smoke wrapping the frame while spectators stare into the sky.
”I was crawling on the ground to get this shot, almost laying flat trying to find the right angle,” he said. “Then this guy turned around and I was like ‘Hi, can I get your name’ while receiving this awkward look from the people around.”
Quinn’s love for photography began at a young age when his mother gave him his first camera for a birthday present. Shooting with a Canon 1d Mark II and Canon 7d camera bodies, he has an arsenal of lenses that help freeze the moments as he documents history in real time.
“I am blessed that I get paid to do a job that I love,” said Quinn. “I am able to capture a part of history and share it with the readers of the newspaper. Sometimes it’s simply documenting the weather where I captured the image of a H3 splashing through a puddle that turns out to look more like a commercial print than a news assignment, then there are other assignments that are a bit more exciting and nothing beats being on the sideline of a state football contest where the level of competition provides the opportunity for great images.”
The show is on display through Thursday in the upper gallery of building 102 on the Central Texas College campus. Hours of operation for the library are from 7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and open until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
