Cove teacher wins Lady Bird grant

A Cove teacher will remove an eyesore from campus and replace it with a learning opportunity thanks to a grant she received from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Theresa Garcia, a 4th grade teacher at Martin Walker Elementary, will use the money needed to start a school garden. The school had two portable buildings removed from the campus, leaving the areas where they stood unsightly. After a recent visit to the Lady Bird Johnson wildlife Center, Garcia noticed the native plants that were there and the amount of water that was needed to maintain the plants. “My original idea was to have a container garden. But the extreme heat we experienced this summer made me realize that if it were maintained, we would have to start each school year fixing it and spending more money on plants.
