Remembering our Dawgs in uniform...

ell, how was your Memorial Day?

Did you sleep late, then relax until suppertime when the hamburgers, hot dawgs, potato salad and beverages (adult and otherwise) were ready for a start-to-summer feast? Me too.

But, after emceeing the Killeen Memorial Day Observance, I also spent time thinking what the day was about.  You can see it for yourself by googling “Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns,” or with a drive out to the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery on South Highway 195.  It’s a home for heroes who gave all for their country, not necessarily in combat, mind you, but to defend our way of life in whichever manner Uncle Sam needed them to.  I’m not about to forget any of them, nor another group of brave Americans.

A few years back, something new appeared on the Bulldawg Stadium jumbotron at halftime of Bulldawg games.  It was the brainchild of Copperas Cove High grad Bridget Hattaway, who got the heads up from head coach Jack Welch and Dawgs in Uniform was born, with names and pictures up there for all to see.  It’s a great remembrance of our Copperas Cove kids who have defended and are defending the colors of this great land.

See how many you remember...Jamal Sarhani, Raquel Luna, David Sheer, Michael Rivera, Jake Mullins, Jessica Tosado, Benjamin Morinere, Scott McLendon, Brandon King, Tommey Lyons...

Bobby Bunnell, Kelly Lyons, Douglas Galick, Jimmy Richey, Nicholas Lawrence, Matthew Rodriguez, Joseph Altemus, Branden Wells, Edward Leslie III, Ronnie Duke...

Thomas Lerchenfelt Jr., Shane Gorman, Robert Briggs, Adam Flood, John Throneberry, Carrien Henley, Ronnie Maydayag, Sean Christopher, Milton Parker, Raytoya James...

Andrew Conner, Scott Wheeless, Will Brown, Net Sanchez, John Lowery, Ashley Zweifelhofer, Patrick Bickel, Truman Silivelio, Kimberly Scott, Chip Alger...

Not every name on that video board belongs to an athlete and I probably missed some, but they are soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen every one, doing their duty and who better to do that job than Dawgs in Uniform.

Go Dawgs!
