Bulldawg basketball is in the house
Calling all Copperas Cove roundball fans..now hear this!
After burning up the highway on a season-starting, two-game road trip, and to borrow a phrase from pro wrestler The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson)…
“Finally! The Dawgs have come back to Copperas Cove!”
This first Bulldawg Gym appearance will be just like old home week too.
Which fan doesn’t remember all those many matchups between Cove and the KISD schools when we were all in the same district together? Personally…
I’ll always remember that night in February 2013 when Shoemaker came to town needing a win to clinch the league title. In the second overtime, Cove trailed 72-70 with just seconds left.
Timeout.
Doing my announcerly duties, I had just told the crowd that no matter how the game ends, no one was allowed on the floor but players, coaches and officials.
Time in.
Dawgs have the ball, Super Sophomore Rashard Odomes passes to Montre Williams, who sidesteps a Grey Wolf defender and pops from the top of the key…
Yes! Nothing but net! Dawgs win 73-72 and are playoff bound! Fans rush the floor. I don’t say a word.
Tonight’s game will bring together another pair of past rivals when the Killeen High Kangaroos, Copperas Cove’s oldest KISD opponent will check into the gym. No league honors will be at stake, since once again the schools have been split apart by enrollment figures, but after an opening game 79-77 loss at Liberty Hill and Monday’s
97-43 Ellison home win over Cove, this contest will give Dawg head coach Travis Boyce Jr.
and varsity assistant Lawrence Payne Jr. another good look at things before Copperas Cove
heads off on Monday to the Arlington Martin tournament.
I’m thinking many fans will come out for this one if only for the nostalgia factor, but you can bet it’ll be filled with hard-fought, tough basketball and who knows..maybe even some drama.
That’s why I wouldn’t dare miss Killeen at Copperas Cove. Tipoff time 7 p.m.
Go Dawgs!
