Waffle Cone will be closing its doors in November, but before that happens, they have teamed up with The Norns to host a market event once a month through the summer.
The Norns and Waffle Cone teamed up Sunday to host a Summer Market & Party. The market event lasted from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and featured 42 different vendors, free bounce house, and games.
Brittany Weimert, co-owner of The Norns, said that they have been hosting monthly market events for about three years now, two of those years within Copperas Cove.
“It really builds the local community,” said Weimert. “It pulls locals out here to shop small. It also gives all of these small businesses a place to show people what they have, what they’re doing, what they’re making. With the summer market, we’re really pushing to make it a family event.”
Ariel Miller, from Mississippi, is in the area visiting family and was excited to attend along with her husband and their three children, Addilynn (5), Ruby (4), and Michaela (2).
“It’s been really great. We’re having a good time,” said Miller. “Everyone was nice. I really liked all the homemade stuff.”
Miller said that the kids enjoyed the shaved ice and other goodies that she purchased and Addilynn in particular loved playing in the bounce house.
Weimert said that they try to limit their vendors to make sure that there are not more than two or three selling similar products. Vendors at Saturday’s event included sales of food/beverages including shaved ice, cotton candy, popcorn and more. Some vendors sold handmade crafts including crochet items, buttons, stickers, and jewelry. One vendor provided tarot card readings.
Josh Arrington helps run Happy Hippie Crafting Co-op which participated in the vendor event. Arrington sells his homemade blown glass and ceramic creations. His fellow co-owners sell ceramic and crochet items. Arrington showed off several glass necklaces that he’d created.
“It’s been good today,” said Arrington. “It’s been hot, so I didn’t have high expectations, but it’s been really good.”
Weimert said that they were happy to team up with Waffle Cone. She called Waffle Cone owner, John Hayes, “sweet” and encouraged residents to attend next month’s event to provide support to the business which will be closing later this year.
“We appreciate The Norns for letting us piggyback onto their event,” said John Hayes, owner of the Waffle Cone. “It’s just one thing that we can do for the community.”
Hayes said that he enjoys participating in community events like the ones last weekend. He is looking forward to the next one.
The summer market day events co-hosted by The Norns and Waffle Cone will take place July 20, August 17, and September 24.
